It’s been a good week for skiing around here. Just enough new snow to freshen up the trails, and temperatures that are not unbearable (and not too much wind).
I was out on the trail at a nearby park and was struck by how many small children were skiing with parents and grandparents. A number of the adults were encouraging the kids. The really striking thing, though, was how the kids were encouraging everyone else.
As I passed one little girl, probably about five years old, she hollered at me. “Missus! You’re doing so great! Great job!”
I returned the compliment, and she responded enthusiastically, “This is only my second time! I am SO FAST!!”
It made me think.
I’m not sure that as adults, we are always so excited to be a beginner at something. Why is that? Do we think as adults that we are supposed to have already figured it out, to know everything we need to know, to be accomplished and successful?
When there are so many amazing and exciting things to learn and discover, it’s really a great gift to be able to start something new. To be a beginner- to embrace what it means to start from the ground and work our way up- is an opportunity to grow.
This year, I intend to rediscover the joy of being new at something, and I’d invite you to do the same. It’s a great time to check out one of our choirs or to get involved in a new capacity at the Cathedral.
We will be offering a mini-class for those who would like to learn to read music (or improve their skills). It will be on Wednesday evenings at 6:40 in the music rehearsal room. We will practice and learn for 15 minutes before choir rehearsal starts at 7:00. All all are welcome to join and learn…and you’re welcome to check out choir rehearsal afterward, too!
Let’s all enjoy the chance to begin anew- and let’s encourage each other along the way.
